Introduction to Gilding and Gold Leaf
10.15am - 4.30pm
£60 plus £10 material costs (includes lunch)
Ever fancied gilding your own frames? Join Rob Oldfield this summer to learn this specialised skill.

The day will start with a private tour of Scampston Hall to show how gold and silver have been used historically to decorate items. You will be handling loose imitation leaf and real gold and silver leaf, learning the difference between them and their applications. You will be gilding a small plaster frame and some natural forms i.e. shells, fossils, bones which you can take home.

About Rob Oldfield
Rob Oldfield is a gilder, typographer and educator, with nearly forty years’ experience working in museums and historic interiors. Currently full-time Art Technician at York St John University, he also works as Technician and Art Handler at various museums and galleries including the National Railway Museum and York Art Gallery. The importance of gilding as part of this work has created a desire to pass on his knowledge so that it does not become yet another ‘forgotten art’ in an increasingly digital world.
