Discover the fascination of orchids and the connection between Scampston and the orchid world...

This one-hour lecture will take place in Scampston Conservatory. Our guest speaker for this free lecture is Art E Chadwick from the USA. Inspired by Scampston’s historical connection with the propagation of orchids, he has kindly offered to break off his holiday in the UK to visit Scampston and to offer us this free lecture.

The large heated conservatory at Scampston, built by Richardson of Darlington in 1894, enabled WH St Quintin and Head Gardener Frederick Puddle, to develop a specialism in orchid growing – the propagation of slipper orchids (Paphiopedilum) and the development of new orchid hybrids (grex). Their work in this area influenced orchid growing nationally, as the parentage of many modern orchids owe their existence to Puddle’s strong specimens of Paphiopedilum ‘Albion’, ‘Astarte’ and ‘Snowdrift’.

Art is looking forward to sharing his own expertise with modern day enthusiasts for this beautiful flower.

About the Course Leader

Art E Chadwick holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State and an MBA from James Madison University. He founded Chadwick & Son Orchids Inc in 1989 with his father who had been growing orchids since 1943.

The Chadwick’s first book, The Classic Cattleyas, from 2006 sold out and was reissued with new material last year. Martha Stewart favourably reviewed the book and had both Chadwick’s on her TV Show. A second book, First Ladies and their Cattleyas: A Century of Namesake Orchids, is scheduled for 2022.

The Chadwick’s have the distinction of naming Cattleya hybrids after the wives of the six most recent U.S. Presidents and personally presenting the flowers to most of the honoured recipients.

Art is a 'regular' on the orchid society speaker's circuit and has spoken at two World Orchid Conferences - France 2005 and Ecuador 2017. For twenty years, he wrote a monthly orchid advice column that was carried by newspapers around the country.

Chadwick’s operates 11 greenhouses in rural Powhatan County, two retail stores in Richmond, and boards over 13,000 orchids for local clients. The company was recently featured in Southern Living magazine, The New York Times, Bloomberg News, Smithsonian magazine, Better Homes and Gardens, The Washington Post, The CBS Evening News, and Oprah magazine.
